Crain's: Canton startup Vlipsy makes some noise with $1.3 million in seed financing

Vlipsy, a Canton startup that helps people augment their online communications with video clips that include sound, announced it has raised $1.3 million in seed funding from investors that include JumpStart Inc., North Coast Angel Fund, Impact Angel Fund, Flashstarts, GLIDE and Cox Enterprises Inc.Specific terms of the investments were not disclosed. The funding comes after Vlipsy graduated from the Techstars Atlanta accelerator, a program for promising entrepreneurs that's backed by Cox.Vlipsy was co-founded earlier this year by CEO Chris Nickless and Matt Tew. It allows users to find, create and share sound-enabled clips from internet videos. The concept is similar to that of sites like GIPHY, which provide images known as GIFs, but the Vlipsy clips feature sound, unlike GIFs, which are silent.Nickless said in a news release that the seed funding, "combined with the momentum coming out of Techstars, will allow us to ramp up our apps and partnerships, grow our team and continue integrating more media partners."In conjunction with Techstars Atlanta's "Demo Day" on Tuesday, Oct. 10, Vlipsy announced mobile apps for both iMessage and Android, which enables sharing to WhatsApp, SMS, Facebook, Messenger and Twitter while also enabling downloading for sharing to Instagram and Snapchat.Rem Harris, JumpStart's senior partner in charge of investing, said in the release, "In less than a year, Vlipsy has already become a major player in a rapidly growing sector. GIFs are such a massively popular method of communication, and sound-enabled video clips like the ones Vlipsy creates have the potential to be even more engaging."
