MANSFIELD -- Four startups will present at the SunDown RunDown business pitch event on Wednesday, March 8.Among the presenters is 2003 Lexington graduate Dan Manges, who co-founded Braintree Payment Systems in Chicago after graduating from DeVry University with a Bachelor of Computer Information Systems. PayPal bought the company in 2013 for $800 million.Since then, Manges has moved back to Ohio and helped found two other companies, one of which -- Fractal Surfing -- was a tenant at Braintree Business Development Center (no relation to the Chicago business) in Mansfield."We built some interesting products but didn't quite get the product market we needed to turn it into a viable business," Manges said.It wasn't long before Manges, 31, began working on his third startup, Root Car Insurance. The Columbus-based company launched in October of last year."We sell car insurance and the main thing that we do is we set the prices for our insurance based on how well people drive," Manges explained. "What we've done at Root is we built a mobile app that can be used to help determine whether or not somebody is good driver, and then use that to incorporate how well people drive into the price that they pay for insurance."People will have an opportunity to hear more about the business at SunDown RunDown.Manges has attended and even pitched at this event before when he was with Fractal Surfing."The thing I'm looking most forward to is engaging with the group of people that typically attend the SunDown RunDown event," he said."I've learned a tremendous number of helpful things and gotten really great advice from that community, so I'm just very excited to come back again and see what the community has to say and what they have to offer about what I'm currently working on at Root."SunDown RunDown started in Columbus in 2013 and has since added chapters in Akron, Mansfield, New Albany, Canton and Youngstown. The business pitch event helps entrepreneurs make connections with investors, mentors, and talent to help take their idea to the next step. +1 Buy Now Beau Roberts, the entrepreneur behind a board game, “A Dog’s World,” presents at a previous SunDown RunDown. File photo Bob Cohen, who oversees both the Mansfield and Canton chapters, said the event is sector neutral, meaning a range of businesses -- high-tech, lifestyle, culinary, etc. -- can present. Featured on the lineup this year are Studio Stick, a portable recording system using a smart phone to produce high quality audio recordings; Chartbuilder, a software startup that's working on a patient management and EMR platform for chiropractors and physical therapy practices; Eco Energy, a Mansfield company that is producing renewable H2 from municipal waste and other feedstocks; and Root Car Insurance. "This has been a great event," Cohen said. "It really highlights what's going on in entrepreneurship in the area and it's helped a lot of entrepreneurs get their start. For many people, this is the first public pitch that they've ever made."InfoGPS pitched at the first SunDown RunDown event in Mansfield three years ago, which helped land the company $190,000 in investment funds."We have had lots of success stories of people making good connections and finding sources for their material," Cohen said. Each presenter will do a five-minute pitch followed by five minutes of Q&A."One of the good things about SunDown RunDown is it provides a showcase for our local entrepreneurs, and so we're always excited to have local companies pitch, but it also provides a mechanism for out-of-town startups to come to Mansfield and see what kind of entrepreneurial ecosystem we have," Cohen said."We see it as a plus when people from Cleveland or Columbus think enough of Mansfield's entrepreneurial infrastructure to want to come and pitch here in town and see what there is in terms of connections here. Occasionally it's had the effect of attracting people to the Mansfield area when they see that there are things like SunDown RunDown going on."SunDown RunDown is free to attend, but everyone is responsible for their own food and drink. It will take place at Old Bag of Nails on Lexington Avenue at 5:30 p.m. Register for the event by clicking here.
