Entrepreneur Dan Manges and his business partner, who prefers to be known simply as Hammer, are in the process of launching Fractal Surfing, a software start-up with a niche in the market of website building and content management. What makes Fractal Surfing unique in the world of online platforms is the simplicity of use for the business owner, as the editing interface is built directly onto the website.“There aren’t any pop ups; there aren’t any buttons and tool bars. They click one button to say that they want to edit changes, and then they can click anywhere on the site to change text,” explained Manges. For instance, a business owner simply needs to log in with his password, and then changes can be made directly on the site as it would appear to viewers, rather than through a complicated series of coding or use of confusing content management tools.“A lot of the other content management systems that are out there now have more complicated back ends,” said Manges. He noted that many companies have one person qualified to update their website, due to the complexity.“We thought there was a great opportunity to make that very intuitive, very easy to make changes,” he said, noting it is faster for business owners to make changes with the Fractal Surfing software than it is to send an email to the webpage administrator asking for changes.“We are very excited about it,” said Manges. “We think it’s going to save people a lot of time. Possibly, where small businesses have had to designate an IT administrator, we think we can free that person up to do more complex tasks, which would add value in another way.”Fractal Surfing has yet to launch officially. The company was formed in April, said Manges. “We started looking for ways we could help small businesses that would also give us a foundation for building Fractal Surfing.”Manges looked to Braintree Business Development Center and its cohort classes for help with the early stages of the business, he said, and Fractal Surfing later revamped the Braintree website.“We looked at it as an opportunity to help Braintree, but also build some technology that we could use as a foundation for building a software platform for Fractal Surfing,” he added.Braintree CEO Bob Cohen said they are excited to have Fractal Surfing, and Manges, as a Braintree tenant, “We like to think of it as ‘local boy makes good, returns home.’”Manges, who graduated from Lexington High School and attended DeVry University, came into Fractal Surfing with previous startup experience.“He graduated from DeVry, heard about an opportunity with a startup in Chicago, was its founding chief technology officer, and literally built the whole platform that it’s based on,” said Cohen. That startup was Braintree Payment Solutions LLC, which was acquired by Paypal for $800 million, added Cohen. “It’s just the classic, what every entrepreneur wants to do.”In addition to Braintree Business Development Center, Fractal Surfing has also been occupied working with a Columbus cross-fit center, assisting with membership billing as well as event registration. “We’re taking these projects we are doing now, and we are using it as a way to build some software that we are going to turn into a more general purpose software platform.”“We think we are going to have a good opportunity to help small businesses with their website, event registration, membership billing and payments, and other things that may go into servicing their customers online with modern technology,” said Manges.Braintree Payment Solutions is not affiliated with Braintree Business Development Center.
